Five Questions with Lee R. Lambert, PMP, CEO
A founder of the PMP
We are delighted to share insights from a recent interview with Mr. Lee Lambert, one of the founders of the PMP exam. Mr. Lambert graciously answered our questions and provided valuable insights that we are excited to share. We extend our heartfelt thanks to Mr. Lambert for his invaluable contribution to this edition of our newsletter.
1. Mr. Lambert, as one of the founders of the PMP, you've witnessed the growth and impact of PMI over the years. In your opinion, what major role do you feel PMI will have in the future of project management?
I firmly believe that PMI is uniquely positioned to be the catalyst for an efficient "on-boarding" of the millions of new project managers being forecast by the end of this decade. PMI has established many of the standards currently used in the profession. 1.5 million people are Certified through the PMI-PMP Credential. PMI has launched a dedicated effort to establish and grow what they call the PMI Project Management Community, where information sharing along with value mentoring can be easily accomplished.
2. Throughout your extensive career, you've undoubtedly gained valuable insights. Could you share the best advice you would give any new or aspiring PM? Are there specific skills, mindsets, or approaches that you believe are crucial for success?
Great question. Anyone who is new to the project management world would be wise to find the smartest person in the room and then suck their brain for all of the knowledge they have gained during their career. This "mentoring" can flatten a new person's learning curve and make them productive sooner. For me, the most useful skill is asking lots of questions and listening to the answers. PM is NOT about tools! PM is about PEOPLE!
I would require all Project Managers to get involved with Toastmasters or similar. Decision support information communicated poorly can spell disaster.
3. Effective collaboration and networking are essential in project management. How has PMI fostered a sense of community among project management professionals, and in your opinion, how important is networking for career growth in this field?
PMI provides numerous formal and informal opportunities to collaborate with their peer groups. From small working groups to Global Summits with 3,000+ attending. PMI "gets it" when it comes to the idea of collaboration and community.
Additionally, the use of social media to stay "connected" makes it much easier to reach your peers. (I have nearly 100,000 followers, and I use it to get and share information.) My motto: "It's all about networking!"
4. Project managers often face various challenges in their roles. From your perspective, what are some of the current challenges and opportunities that project managers are encountering, and how can PMI support its members in navigating these complexities?
Unrealistic expectations in schedules, costs, and disconnection with organizational strategy. No prioritization of multiple projects. Opportunity awaits the person who is not afraid to take a risk. No pain, no gain. A person who uses common sense to solve complex problems will quickly be in demand.
5. Joseph Phillips, a renowned project management expert and trainer, is well-known for his contributions to the field. Could you share how you came to know Joseph and discuss any collaborations or experiences you've had together that have positively impacted the project management community?
I have never met Joe. I know him through the exposure on social media. I know him because I watch him and respect what he has accomplished and how many professionals he has nurtured as they expand their knowledge base. I listen to feedback from those he has helped. Who better to judge a teacher than the students? You don't have to know someone to know someone. I know Joe!

TRIVIA TIME
According to the Stakeholder Salience Model, what does "Legitimacy" refer to in the context of categorizing stakeholders? |
The correct answer to last week’s trivia question: The 80/20 Rule
The principle that emphasizes the importance of delivering results and creating value in a project, placing a higher priority on outcomes rather than getting bogged down by policies, procedures, and processes, is often associated with the 80/20 Rule. The 80/20 Rule, also known as the Pareto Principle, suggests that 80% of the effects come from 20% of the causes, and it is often applied to various aspects of business and project management, highlighting the importance of focusing on the most critical factors that contribute to success.
